As a business owner or facility manager, you go out of your way to make sure your office building is clean and free of hazards. But do you address restroom facilities with the same concern?

If not, there are important reasons why you need to make clean restrooms a priority.

  Customer Expectations

First, you want to make the best impression on clients. Your customers expect a clean restroom. If it is not inviting, customers associate your business with being unprofessional, and you will lose their business.

  Employees Well-Being

Also, clean bathroom facilities are crucial to the health and wellbeing of your employees. Unsanitary conditions contribute to a wide range of avoidable health concerns.

Research shows that over 77,000 types of bacteria and viruses are found in commercial bathrooms at any given time. Some of the most dangerous include Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), fecal bacteria, E. coli, and norovirus.

And the most shocking thing is that the toilet is not the dirtiest place in a public restroom.

A study performed by BioCote found sinks were the dirtiest place in a bathroom. Sinks had over 50,000 bacteria on their surface. Handrails and toilet paper dispensers followed as being dirtier than a toilet seat.

Knowing this can help you change your approach to how restrooms in your office are cleaned. This also provides additional insurance in addressing the safety of your customers and employees.

  Daily Duties

Make sure that restrooms are stocked daily with toilet paper, paper towels, and seat covers.

Use gloves to pick up any paper towels and debris on the floors daily

If full, empty trash cans and recycling bins that are full and replace with a new liner.

  Weekly Chores

Sanitize all touch point surfaces (door handles, faucets, toilet handles, light switches, paper dispensers). Cleaning solution should sit on surfaces for 60 seconds before wiping down to be the most effective.

Dust the top of stall doors, hand dryers, shelves, and cabinets.

Remove water spots on fixtures and fingerprints on glass mirrors and doors.

Sweep and mop floors with tools and cleaning supplies that are only used to clean bathrooms. This will help prevent the spread of cross-contamination.

Use one bucket to rinse your mop and another bucket that contains a cleaning solution. If the water in either bucket is dirty, toss and fill again. (Cleaning with dirty water defeats the purpose).

Sanitize your mop by rinsing until water runs clear. Next, fill a bucket with hot water and a cup of bleach and let sit for 10 minutes. Then rinse and hang to dry.

  Touch-free Technology

You may also install different mechanisms in your office that limit the amount of human contact, hence reducing contamination in your office.

Even if employees have the best hand washing regimen, indirect contamination still occurs. This is when staff touches a dirty toilet seat, paper towel dispenser or the door handle when entering or exiting the bathroom.

Because of this, consider technologies that help to cut down on contamination if there is room in your budget.

Touchless faucets and self-flushing toilets are another way to limit hands-on contact, furthering the reduction of cross-contamination. Consider installing touchless paper towel dispensers also. An additional benefit is this does away with paper towels strewn on the floor around the trash can.

Adding light sensors is another way to cut down on the number of surfaces touched. A bonus is that sensors can help with energy savings.

THE 4 SURPRISING BENEFITS OF A CLEAN HOME

A clean home is not only good for your physical health, but also benefits your mental health.

We all know that a clean home looks nice. But besides the esthetics of a clean home, there are many other benefits derived from keeping your house tidy.

  More Time & Money

A cluttered home can wreak havoc on the start of your morning. How?
If you are constantly searching for your misplaced keys or wallet, not only does this cause undue stress, but you waste time every day.

Also, when items do not have a proper place, often you end up buying something you already own because you cannot find the original item. This is not only frustrating but expensive in the long run.

Designate places for items in your home. That way you always know where to find something.

  Healthier Children

You do everything to provide your child with the best life possible. Because of that, you need to make sure that your children live in a clean, organized home.

Why? The average child spends 80-90% indoors. Dust and even mold are found more often in a dirty home, causing respiratory illnesses in children. When your home is cleaned regularly, you cut down on these dangerous allergens.

Another reason to strive for a clean living environment for your kid? A study published in 2011 in the Journal of Neuroscience showed that too many different objects in a child’s field of view overstimulates their brain. If your house is messy and cluttered, it may be overwhelming for your child to handle, affecting their ability to focus. This is dangerous because a lack of focus in toddlers leads to slowed learning.

  Enhanced Creativity

Living in a messy environment affects your creativity and may alter your ability to make clear decisions. If you think creativity does not matter to your well-being, you are wrong.

We are born with the ability to be creative as an infant. And it is the process that allows us to navigate life’s ups and downs.

When your house is clean, you have more energy to spend time on making better decisions and find innovative ways to solve problems.

  Increased Happiness

Feeling overwhelmed by household chores can negatively affect your health. Your brain is not able to shut off signals that cleaning needs to be done.

A study in the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin showed that women who found their homes to be “cluttered” were more tired and depressed. They also had higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol than women that described their home environment as “restful” and “restorative.”

Keeping your home clean and tidy makes you feel better and allows you to enjoy the space you live in.

If you are unsure where to start, tackle one small task at a time.

What Needs to Be Cleaned After Being Sick

If you are finally feeling better after a bad cold, or worse the flu, take precautions to clean and disinfect immediately. Why? Flu viruses can live on surfaces for up to 24 hours, and cold viruses can survive on indoor surfaces for up to seven days. If left unclean, you can get sick again or make other family members ill.

  Bedding

Any sheets and blankets used during your illness should be washed immediately upon feeling better. If your pillows are washable, toss them in also.

Think about it. You have been coughing and sneezing while lying in bed. Your bedding has absorbed all of that harmful bacteria. Get rid of nasty germs by washing everything in the hottest water possible.

  Mattress

Because of sweat and other bacteria accumulated from lying in bed, this is a perfect time to deep clean your mattress. Sprinkle baking soda on it and let it sit for a couple of hours. Then vacuum and make your bed with fresh, clean linens. Your bed is ready for you to have a restful night of sleep. Finally!

Hand towels, bath towels, washcloths, and any robes or loungewear worn need a proper washing also. As with bedding, wash all these items in the hottest cycle.

When someone is sick in your family, give them a separate towel to use. Or use disposable hand towels. This will help lessen the spread of a virus between family members.

And don’t forget your toothbrush. If it is a cheap one, throw it away and use a new one. If it is a more expensive one, fill a cup with hydrogen peroxide and soak the bristles for 30 minutes. This will kill any lingering germs. Your clean toothbrush needs a sanitary holder. So make sure to wash your toothbrush holder in the dishwasher, or by hand with hot soapy water if it is not dishwasher safe.

Sink handles, toilet handles, door knobs and light switches get touched frequently. Regardless of how many times you washed your hands, it is easy for these things to become contaminated. Also, don’t forget the remote control. It may already be one of the germiest places in your home, without having the flu.

If your kids were sick, wash and disinfect all toys that they have played with during their illness. Toss stuffed animals into the wash on a gentle cycle. Clean legos and other durable, plastic toys in the dishwasher, by placing them in a mesh laundry bag on the top rack. If you have a steamer, use it to clean delicate toys.
As you are cleaning, make sure to open the blinds and curtains to get a little bit of sunshine in your home. Sunlight will not only boost your mood after being sick, but it also may help to kill microbes in your home. And if the weather is right, an open window or door will help circulate fresh air inside.

Your home will now be clean and healthy. Enjoy!

Your family's health and safety is your utmost concern, and you make sure to stay on top of cleaning and other household tasks on a regular basis. But are you neglecting these chores?

  Deep Clean Your Dryer

While you clean the lint trap in your dryer on a regular basis, when is the last time you cleaned the vent and ducts? Did you know that dirty vents and ducts cause more than 15,000 building fires each year in the U.S.?

Make this the year to make this chore a priority. If this is a job you are not up for, consider hiring a professional. HomeAdvisor shows that the national average cost for this task is $132. When it comes to the safety of your family and home, this is money well spent.

Furthermore, when the duct is clean, it takes less time to dry clothes, because your dryer runs more efficiently. This means you save money on your energy bill.

Label and Store Household Products in a Safe Place

Are household products stored in a safe place, away from children and pets? Poisoning is the second-leading cause of accidental deaths in homes, with more than 5,000 deaths occurring a year. Don't let this happen in your home.

Invest in safety latches on cabinets that house cleaning products, so little ones cannot get into them. Better yet, store them out of reach. Also, keep yourself safe. One of the most dangerous things you can do is mix products or use products that react with one another. Label spray bottles and other containers with a dark permanent marker to ensure that you know what you are using.

And don’t forget there are many other harmful products. Cosmetics, glue, paint, and laundry detergents are a few other items that need to be safely stored from little ones and pets.

  Germ Filled Shower Heads

Do you clean your shower heads? If not, you should. Why? Because there is a buildup of bacteria and mold due to a constantly damp environment. Some of those bacteria may be especially harmful to family members that have compromised immune systems, causing a type of pneumonia and lung disease.

Even though you may be tempted to use bleach, don't. Scientists found that bleach multiplies certain strains of bacteria in shower heads. And you should stay away from commercial cleaning products, as these chemicals can damage your shower head.

The best solution is vinegar. Simply pour vinegar into a plastic bag and secure the bag around the shower head with a rubber band. Let it soak for a few hours and remove. Finally, use a toothbrush to scrub your shower head clean of any residual buildup.

Not only will your shower head be healthy and clean, but you have the added benefit of better water pressure.

Changing the Air Filter on Your Furnace

Dirty air filters are harmful to your furnace. Because there is less air flow, evaporator coils can get a buildup of ice, then overheat. This leads to your unit breaking down or even a fire.

Many factors contribute to dust and dirt in your filter. If you have indoor pets, more allergens are trapped in the filter and spread throughout your home. Also, if you love fresh air, and leave windows and doors open, naturally more dirt and dust are picked up through your system.

By changing filters monthly, you are providing your family better air quality, thus a healthier home.

Another reason to keep a monthly schedule is that it will save you more money in the long run. Not only will you save on repairs, but consider this. Angie’s List says that consistently changing your filters saves you anywhere from 5 to 15 percent on utility costs.

A little maintenance and care in your home go a long way in keeping your family safe from hazards. Here's to keeping your family in good hands in the new year ahead.

Flu season is here. Even if you do everything possible to avoid being sick, it can be tough if you work in an office with multiple people. Unfortunately, influenza and cold viruses can live on hard surfaces for up to three days. Worse, a virus can be passed up to seven times.

No wonder why it seems like everyone gets sick at work all at once. Fortunately, there are pre-cautions. But following these measures will help keep your office safer during the flu season with fewer sick people.

Stay Home When You Are Ill

Some work environments make employees feel pressured to come to work when they are ill. The worst thing that you can do when you are sick is come to work. Studies show that germs spread quickly (in just a couple of hours), affecting the health and productivity within the office.

Instead, management should encourage people to stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone. At this point, you are no longer contagious.

And if you are the boss, you need to set a good example and also stay at home when you are sick. Doing so shows employees that you are concerned about their health and the safety of their coworkers. It also encourages your staff to do the same, taking time to rest and get better.

  Touch Point Cleaning

Even if you have a professional cleaning company, you still should regularly clean all touch points.

What are touch points? Doorknobs, light switches, faucets, coffee pot handles, and toilet handles are some of the most common ones in the office. When surfaces are not cleaned, bacteria count increases up to 31% per day.

Many hands touch these items repeatedly throughout the day, spreading that bacteria to other areas. Keep sanitizing wipes in the breakroom and restrooms and encourage employees to wipe down these areas as they come in contact with them.

  Tissues & Sanitizer

It sounds so simple, but tissues cut down on the spread of germs when employees to cough or sneeze into them. Still, many people do not know how to properly cough or sneeze.

Send a friendly company email to all individuals. You can remind employees to wash their hands often during the season and most importantly, do not sneeze into the air or hands. Instead, use a tissue.

Also, make sure that there is plenty of hand sanitizer around. Suggest that employees use it at the beginning of the morning to clean their desks, as well as the end of the day. Wipe telephones, keyboards, and the mouse, as well as exposed surfaces on the desktop. This will make for a cleaner, healthier workstation (and your office will look better too).

Your staff will be healthier this year and happier when your office takes precautions this flu season.

When you have children, it can be challenging to keep your home clean, especially if they are younger.

Kids want to help. Don't they already follow you and pretend to do the tasks that you are doing? Instead of feeling overwhelmed with cleaning tasks, enlist their help.

Teaching your kids to clean up after themselves helps you keep your home more organized. It also allows your child to develop responsibility and a sense of accomplishment. Best of all, when kids learn to clean at a young age, the easier it is for them to continue this habit as they get older.

How Can You Help Make Cleaning More Manageable For Your Kids?

If they are young, sit down on the floor and look at a room from their perspective. See what is easy to pick up and what may be more demanding based on your child's age and height.

Place a couple of bins/baskets in the room on the ground. Regardless of their height, this allows for your child to pick up toys and put them away. Even toddlers can help pick up a few toys and return them to their proper place.

Another helpful hint is to take photos of each basket with the appropriate toys placed in them. These pictures will cue your child as to what belongs where. This means even younger kids can figure out what goes where.

  Be Specific

et realistic expectations for your child’s age and skill level. A 3-year-old is not going to be able to clean up their room. When kids hear this, they can become overwhelmed and throw a tantrum.

Instead, say precisely what you want to be done. For instance, ask that all the Legos are picked up off the floor. Or ask that all stuffed animals are put away.

  Make Cleaning Fun

Reward your children for completing cleaning chores. Keep track of tasks completed with stickers on a chart. When a set amount of stickers are rewarded, give your kid a special privilege or treat.

Music is also a motivator when cleaning (even for us as adults). Play a song and see who can pick up the most toys before the song ends. The child that picks up the most toys gets to pick the next song played. Dance during this song, and then go back to cleaning for the next song. Not only is your home cleaner, but you get to laugh and burn some calories also!

  Switch Up Toys

Too many choices are overwhelming (the same goes for adults). Keep out one basket of toys only, placing all other toys in a big plastic bin. Rotate toys into the basket every couple of weeks, taking out the ones more recently played with. This allows for toys to feel “new” and exciting. Best of all, there are fewer toys scattered around your home.

At first, it may be challenging to have your kids help clean up after themselves. But the more practice they have, the easier it will become a habit.

The most important thing is to remember to have patience, realistic expectations, and make cleaning fun.

These fall cleaning chores will help make you comfortable, as you spend more time indoors.

It is officially fall. This means you spend more time indoors as it becomes cooler and the days get shorter. Now is the time to take care of the following household chores. When you check these tasks off, your home will be cleaner and more comfortable, making it more enjoyable to be indoors.

      Carpet Cleaning

After a season of open doors and windows, dust and debris settle deep in your carpet’s fibers. Fall is an excellent time to have your carpet professionally cleaned. And scheduling it now means one less thing checked off your list before the busy holiday season.

      Sofas & Chairs

The same goes for your upholstery. Even if it does not look dirty, fabric acts as a filter, holding onto dirt and debris. Vacuum sofas and chairs. Take cushions off wherever you can to clean thoroughly underneath. Use your attachment brush on your vacuum to get into crevices.

If your upholstery is stained, call a professional cleaning company to spot treat and clean. You will be thrilled you did this now, instead of stressing out before parties and holiday celebrations!

Do This Now to Save Money in the Long Run

When is the last time you had your gutters cleaned? Leaves and debris clog drains, affecting proper rain flow. When this happens, you run the risk of a leaky roof, water damage along the sides of your home and at the foundation. Don't let this costly neglect happen to your home.

Make cleaning your gutters an annual priority during the fall season.

The Benefits of Clear, Shiny Windows

Another fall chore is window cleaning. Pick a cooler day with some cloud coverage, because cleaning windows in hot, sunny weather leave streaks. Hard minerals, salt, and dirt degrade the quality of your glass over time. Also when dirt builds up on your windows, this reflects more light. Why does this matter? It means that heat from the sun does not come in as well to warm up your home.

Clean windows provide better heat efficiency throughout your home. The bonus is possibly lowering your heating bill.

      Deter Insects & Pests

Inspect around window seals and doors for any cracks of light. If you can see sunlight coming through, there is room for insects to enter your home. Now is the time to seal any gaps.

Another trick is using essential peppermint oil. Spiders, insects, and rodents do not like the smell. You may also soak cotton balls with essential peppermint oil and place them in corners of your home, by window seals, and outside doors. Finally, do a thorough dusting to get rid of cobwebs in ceilings and corners. One of the best ways is to use a soft duster with an extension pole.

All of these tasks will help make your home less appealing to unwanted critters.

When is the last time you cleaned your doormat? It takes a beating to keep less dirt and debris from coming into your home. But if you do not take care of it, it does not work as efficiently.

First, shake out any loose dust. Next, vacuum to remove any ground in soil that can be loosened with suction. Most doormats stand up to a thorough spray with a garden hose. When you are done cleaning them, let them dry in the sun before use.

These chores not only make your home more cozy for spending time indoors, but they also help with protective maintenance. If you live in Santa Cruz County and need help with fall cleaning, please give Bee-Clene a call at 831-438-1111.

No matter what size your bathroom is, sometimes it is challenging to figure out how to organize products, appliances, and towels. These everyday items will help cut down on the bathroom clutter and keep items used daily organized.

  Hair Appliance Organizer

Flat irons and hair dryers take up a lot of space, especially if you have a small bathroom with limited cabinet space. And all those cords are annoying.

Wrap your cords around your hair appliances and organize them by using a file folder box to store them in. Not only will they be easier to get to, but this will create extra space underneath your sink.

A bonus is there are so many pretty ones to choose from. You are sure to find one that will match your aesthetics.

  One Place For Bobby Pins

Are bobby pins scattered throughout your home and bathroom? If so, use a magnetic cube paper clip holder. This will keep them all in one place. No more poking into back drawer corners or digging through your makeup bag for a bobby pin when you need one.

If your makeup drawer is a treasure chest of goods, it may be agonizing searching for that one lipstick you know is there somewhere. A utensil organizer makes it easy to find items you use regularly close at hand. The compartments are helpful to separate makeup brushes, pencils, lipsticks, and mascaras.

not only looks pretty but is functional. When your cat exits the box, small grooves trap pieces of litter caught in its claws.

Many grooved mats are hard and uncomfortable for cats, but this one is made of soft material similar to a yoga mat. This means your kitty will step onto the mat, versus jumping over it from inside the box and causing a huge mess. And if the litter is not caught in the groove, there is an outer channel that catches it before it rolls onto the floor.

Over time you may notice that your pet’s bed smells, even after washing the cover in the machine? If this is the case, you need to wash the entire bed.

Overnight, soak the whole bed in the tub with hot water, laundry detergent and a ¼ cup of white vinegar (make sure water covers the top of the entire bed). The vinegar will eliminate bad odors and get rid of bacteria.
If the cover is removable, launder in the washing machine with hot water, mild detergent and a 1/4 cup of white vinegar. No more bad smells!

Accidents happen, and occasionally your pet will pee in the house. The worst is when it happens on the carpet.

Minimize damage to your carpet by cleaning properly and ASAP. Also, do not use a harsh scrubbing motion when cleaning soiled carpet. This can discolor and ruin the texture of your carpet.

First, blot with a clean white towel or paper towels. Next, pour water over the spot and blot with a clean towel again. Continue this step until you cannot see any more yellow. Next, use a pet enzymatic cleaner such as Miracle Pet on the stain.

It is important that you use a product specifically to clean up pet stains. These products contain an enzyme that helps to not only remove the stain but also eliminate the smell.

If you do not get rid of the odor, your pet may continue to pee in the same spot, because they can smell the urine. You may need to repeat steps 3-4 a couple of times until the odor is gone.

Hopefully these tips make your pet friendly home cleaner and more manageable.

  Toys Need Cleaning Love

It’s inevitable that toys get dirty. But when is the last time you really cleaned them? If there is visible dirt or toys feel sticky, it's time for a good cleaning. And even if toys do not look dirty, you should always clean any toys handled prior before and during an illness.

    Plastic Toys

For plastic toys that are small enough, you can easily wash them in the dishwasher. Put small toys and pieces inside a mesh laundry bag and place on the upper rack. Use detergent and run a hot water cycle. When finished, not only will toys be cleaned, they will be sanitized.

Wipe down larger plastic toys with a water-vinegar solution and air dry.

    Fabric Toys

You can launder fabric toys stuffed with batting (do not wash toys stuffed with beading). Be careful washing toys that have glued on items, delicate pieces that are not removable, or older irreplaceable toys. Placing toys in a mesh laundry bag will add a layer of protection during washing.

Use the gentle cycle with cold or warm water and detergent. Lastly, hang to dry.

    Bath Toys

Clean bath toys regularly. Body oils and bath water make these toys a haven for germs. Disinfecting them is easy. Wipe toys down with a water-vinegar solution and air dry.

Squeezable toys need a little extra care. It is important to squeeze all the water out. If not, water stays inside and mold grows.

Soak in a water-vinegar solution for 10 minutes. Again, make sure to squeeze all of the water out. Rinse with hot water and place toys upright to air dry. Ideally, store in a room that is less humid than the bathroom.

Don't Bring Sand in the House

Summertime hopefully means more time spent at the beach and playground. Which also means a higher occurrence of unwanted sand entering your home.

Whenever sand is involved, try this trick. Before coming into the house (or car) take some baby powder and sprinkle it wherever there is sand on your body. It will fall off your body because baby powder absorbs the moisture. This will leave sand where it belongs, outside!

And for any remaining sand left behind in your beach bag, use a lint roller to pick it all up.

  Unwanted Wall Colorings

It happens. Kids love to draw on walls instead of their coloring books. Don't stress! Take non-gel toothpaste, rub onto the spot and let it sit for ten minutes. Next, use a cloth and rub in a circular motion on the spot until it disappears. This method works on crayons and markers.

  Kid's Kicks

Kids like to run, play, and have fun. Because of that, their shoes take a beating. And you're left with dirty, scuffed up shoes to deal with.

Mr. Clean Magic Eraser to the rescue!

Just lightly mist an eraser with water from a spray bottle. Then rub on scuff marks and grimy dirt. Magically, your kid’s shoes will look like new and soles will be bright white. Better yet, there is no drying time involved. They can wear them immediately.
HOW TO CLEAN THESE 6 THINGS USING FRESH LEMONS

Tired of using chemicals to get rid of rust, soap scum, and other common problems? Use fresh lemons to fight back.

Lemons are a versatile fruit. As a staple in the kitchen, they flavor sauces and dressings. They are delicious as a starring role in sweet treats. And when added to beverages, lemons offer pure refreshment.

But did you know this fruit also has serious cleaning power? Lemon is a mild disinfectant and unlike other disinfectants, it leaves a natural, clean scent. Here are some tough cleaning chores and how to use lemons for the job.

  Rust

Tired of that rust ring in the tub or little rust spots on your silverware? If so, this DIY scouring paste will make rust vanish. Not to mention, it is safe to use, easy to make, and smells good! Mix salt with lemon juice until it creates a thick paste. Apply and let sit for 30 minutes. Afterward, sponge off and let dry.

  Plastic Containers and Cutting Boards

Over time, cutting boards and containers made of plastic get stained by food. And it seems like these spots never come out. But don't give up yet. Simply squeeze lemon directly onto the stain and rub with the rough side of a kitchen sponge. Then, let the item dry in the sun. Wash afterward. The combo of lemon and the sun’s UV rays make stains disappear.

  Grout

Because lemons are a natural bleaching agent, they are fabulous for cleaning grout. First, mix a paste of baking soda and lemon. Rub onto discolored grout with a toothbrush. After 15 minutes, rinse with warm water. Your grout will be white and clean.

And the fresh lemon scent is a bonus!

  Soap Scum

Don’t you hate staring at soap scum in the shower? Use lemons to get rid of it, instead of harsh chemicals. Cut a lemon in half. Then rub it all over your shower door and rinse with warm water. Repeat if necessary. When finished, your door will sparkle, and your shower will smell so fresh.

  Homemade Furniture Polish

This recipe will make your furniture shine without using aerosol products and synthetic fragrances.

First, squeeze and strain a lemon. Then mix one part juice to two parts olive oil. Apply to a microfiber cloth and polish against the grain. You will be smiling at your reflection in the wood when you see how good your furniture looks.

The best part is, this is so much cheaper than store-bought furniture polish.

  Watermarks on Flatware

Is important company coming over for a fancy dinner? Don’t let watermarks on your silverware steal the show. Just rub a little lemon juice on the spot using a microfiber towel. Rinse, then dry. No more spots!

  Cheese Grater

One of the most frustrating things to clean is a cheese grater. Even after washing, it seems that some bits of hardened cheese residue are forever stuck in a hole or two.

Next time use a lemon to clean your grater. Because lemon cuts grease, it will help remove fatty cheese from the holes. Also, the pulp of the lemon helps to clean the metal. Take half a lemon and scrub. Let it sit for a few minutes and then rinse with hot water. Repeat if needed. At last, your grater is finally clean!

Hopefully, you will be inspired to use lemons next time you clean!

Coffee Maker

Is your coffee maker dripping slowly? When you brew a pot of coffee, does it taste funny? If so, the water reservoir needs to be cleaned. Left dirty, bacteria and mold grow inside. Not only does this make your coffee taste bad, but it can make you sick.

Cleaning your coffee maker is easy. And cleaning once a month will kill bacteria and mold. It will also flush mineral deposits that clog your coffee maker. These deposits are the reason why your coffee takes longer to drip over time.

Fill the reservoir to the top with equal parts water and white vinegar. Put a paper filter in the basket and brew until the pot is half full. Turn off your coffee maker and let it sit for 30 minutes. Then finish the brewing cycle.

Afterward, brew a pot of clear water using a new paper filter. This will rinse the vinegar out of the machine.

And to prevent future mold growth, leave the reservoir lid open after making coffee so that the inside chamber can dry out.

  Dishwasher

Even though your dishwasher has soapy water running through it, it still gets dirty. Over time, grease and grime build up. Also, dangerous fungi and black yeast thrive in the damp environment.

Fortunately, this simple cleaning method will clean your dishwasher and make it safe to use.

First, remove the spray arm from the base and rinse it under the sink faucet. Are there any food particles trapped in the small holes? If so, use a toothpick to remove them. Then reinstall the spray arm.

Next, place a cup of white vinegar in a dishwasher safe container on the upper rack. Run the dishwasher empty through a hot-water cycle.

Now it is disinfected and odor free.

  Garbage Cans

Kitchen trash cans get disgusting. Even when you use liners, bags can tear, and spills happen. Sticky liquids and crumbs end up at the bottom of the can, causing bad odors, mold, and bacteria growth.

Cleaning is easiest if done outside. Squirt a little detergent in the bottom and spray the inside and outside with a garden hose. Rinse and towel dry or leave it in the sun to dry out.

You can also wash a garbage can in the bathtub. Use a sanitized toilet brush and hot soapy water. Dry the inside and outside with a clean towel.

  Refrigerator

Let's face it. Sometimes it is easy to ignore spills that happen in the fridge. But those sticky spills and residue from food create opportunities for bacteria and mold to grow inside your fridge.

Emptying your fridge is the easiest way to make sure every surface gets clean.

Use a solution of water and white vinegar in a spray bottle to clean inside your fridge.

Because vinegar is non-toxic, it is safe to use around food. Best of all it kills mold and certain bacterias that are dangerous to your health.

Spray all surfaces and wipe clean with a microfiber cloth. If your shelves and drawers are removable, take them out and wash them with warm soapy water. If not, spray them too.

Before returning food to the fridge, wipe down all containers and bottles with the water-vinegar mix.

And don’t forget to clean the door seals which get sticky and collect crumbs. Warm, soapy water should do the trick. Afterward, dry with a clean cloth.

These cleaning tips will help kill harmful germs in your kitchen.

  Ceiling Fan

Dust accumulates on the blades of your fan and when you turn it on it knocks harmful allergens into the air. Cleaning your ceiling fan before using it this summer means your home will be cooler and healthier.

Using a pillowcase is the easiest, least messy method.

Get on a ladder and without overextending your arm, reach for a blade. Cover the blade with a pillowcase (as if you are putting a pillow inside the case). Place one hand on the top and your other hand on the bottom of the blade. Finally, pull the pillowcase towards you, making sure to run along the sides.

You are left with a clean fan blade. The best part is dust stays inside the pillowcase, not falling on the floor and furniture.

  Window Screens

Opening windows and letting fresh air in is one of the best joys of summer. But if your screens are dirty, a breeze brings allergens and mold spores into your home. Cleaning your screens will make the air in your home healthier to breathe.

The best way to clean is to take screens down. Using a soft brush attachment (a hard attachment can damage your screen) gently vacuum both sides to get rid of dust. Then spray with a garden hose. Next, using a solution of warm water and vinegar, lightly scrub the screen to remove any grime left behind.

Let screens dry completely before reinstalling.

  Stainless Steel Appliances

With kids at home all summer, your fridge, and other appliances are used more often throughout the day. If you have stainless steel appliances, this means more smudges and fingerprints.

Get rid of unsightly prints. First, use warm soapy water to clean outside surfaces. Then pour a little olive oil onto a cloth and buff the outside surface of the entire appliance until there is a thin, even layer. This will create a barrier to make the surface more resistant to fingerprints and smudges.

Add this routine regularly to your normal cleaning schedule to make your appliances shine.

  Make Your Patio Furniture Inviting

Outdoor chairs and lounges get a lot of use during summer. Dirt, suntan lotion, and body oils linger on these surfaces. Fortunately, cleaning is easy. For most materials, just use warm soapy water and a damp sponge to scrub surfaces (check laundering instructions). An additional benefit is that your furniture will last longer.

  Outdoor Lighting

Cleaning your outdoor lighting will provide more light, allowing you to enjoy summer evenings outside longer.

Use a cobweb duster to reach inner areas of your light fixtures. Then use an all-purpose cleaner (a vinegar and water solution works great) to wipe down all bulbs. You will love how bright your lights shine.
Do you use chemicals to get rid of odors, mold, and mildew in your home? If so, they may be doing more harm than good.

Many air fresheners contain petroleum and formaldehyde which are harmful to your health. And air fresheners don't get rid of the problem. Instead, synthetic fragrances only mask the smell.

The same dangers apply to using bleach and other chemicals to kill mildew and mold. While these products do eliminate the problem, the lingering toxic fumes they give off are harmful to your lungs, eyes, and skin.

Fortunately, there is a safe option to help you fight these issues.

Not only does Moso Natural fight bad odors, but it reduces toxic fumes in the air that you may not even know you are exposed to. For instance, new carpet, fresh paint, and brand new furniture emit gasses such as ammonia, chloroform, benzene, and formaldehyde.

How Does Moso Bamboo Charcoal Work?

Similar to a sponge, there are millions of pores and cavities on the surface of the charcoal. As air moves through the charcoal, the pores trap allergens, odors, and excess moisture. As a result, the surrounding air becomes dry and odor free.

  Long Lasting and Attractive

Some products on the market that remove moisture from the air come in ugly, plastic containers that you want to hide.

Not so with Moso Bamboo Charcoal.

The charcoal is contained in an attractive linen bag, available in three colors. Because of the clean logo, it looks nice if left in plain view. Each bag has a grommet, allowing you the option to hang the bag if so desired. Or if you prefer to stash it out of sight, the small footprint does not take up a lot of space.

Also, Moso Natural lasts for up to two years with regular maintenance, unlike other products that last for 45 days. All you have to do is place the bag outside once a month, for one hour. UV rays from the sun filter and remove impurities that the bamboo charcoal has absorbed.

After two years, you can recycle the charcoal. Simply cut open the bag and use the charcoal to fertilize your garden or flowerbeds.

The bags are available in 3 different sizes and there is also a bag designed for the fridge that includes a suction cup.

The start of summer is here, bringing warmer, longer days to enjoy. This weather also brings an increase of ragweed, grass pollen, and other allergens. Heat and humidity are perfect conditions for the growth of mold. For allergy sufferers, these things make you feel miserable.
Try these cleaning tips to reduce allergens in your home and help make you feel better.

Sweep the outside entrance of your home and take off your shoes before coming inside. These two things will reduce a number of allergens that you bring into your home.

Vacuuming two or three times a week during allergy season will make your home healthier. Make sure to get underneath beds and behind large furniture where dust bunnies gather. Remember to vacuum furniture and curtains also, because they collect and hang on to dust. Using a vacuum with a HEPA filter is best. HEPA filters trap smaller dirt particles, pollen, and pet dander. Consequently, vacuums without a filter throw more debris back into the air.

Are there piles of clutter around your home? If so, get rid of them because they are a magnet for dust.

And use a damp cloth or mop when you clean hard surfaces and floors. This works better than a dry cloth, which only knocks allergens back into the air.

  Kitchen

Mold is one of the worst things for you if you have allergies, and it thrives in the kitchen. Make sure you keep areas by the sink, underneath the sink, and around the dishwasher dry to deter growth. Also, when you cook, use the stove exhaust to remove moisture from the air.

Even if your home is clean, cockroaches can easily get into your home through tiny cracks and crevices. Their sheddings are a trigger for allergies. Keep yourself protected by wrapping and securely storing all food. After cooking, make sure to wipe down the counters and stovetop to get rid of crumbs. Use a trashcan that has a lid on it. And never let dirty dishes pile in the sink.

  Bathroom

Humidity in bathrooms is a perfect condition for mold and mildew to grow. Prevent growth by doing the following:

Use the exhaust or a dehumidifier to decrease humidity. Weekly, clean grout, and tile exposed to water and steam. After using your shower, wipe down wet surfaces with a dry towel. Wash bath mats on a weekly basis. Lastly, if your shower curtains are washable, launder them once a week.

  Indoor Pets

While pets are a joy to have, they can wreak havoc on your allergies. But there are a couple of things you can do to lessen the impact of pet dander on your allergies.

Wash their bedding regularly in hot water. Not only is this better for your allergies, but your pets will benefit from a cleaner, fresher environment.

More importantly, don't let pets sleep in your bedroom. Why? Pets carry pollen on their body. When they shake off and roll around, that debris flies in the air. At night as the temperature cools, the pollen and dust settle towards the ground, making your allergies worse during sleep.

  Cleaning Products

Finally, keep safe when cleaning. While cleaning products do not cause allergies, they can trigger symptoms like sneezing and itchy eyes. If this happens to you, choose green unscented cleaners and laundry detergents.

Think about it. When your dining table has items piled on it, and dirty dishes are in the sink, it feels overwhelming to prepare a meal. As a result, it is easier to snack on prepackaged food or order take-out, which leads to unhealthy choices.

  Your Home Will Be Healthier

Did you know that there may be two to five more times the pollutants and allergens in your home than outdoors?

Vacuuming and dusting weekly help improve the air quality in your home. Wipe down windowsills and frames with a damp cloth. Weekly washing of your sheets and blankets will also have a positive impact on your indoor air. And don't forget to wash curtains on occasion, as they have a tendency to hold onto dust and allergens.

Not only does a tidy and clutter free home feel better, but it is also healthier for you and your family.

Give Yourself the Gift of Time

How often have you spent minutes searching for an item that you know is somewhere in your home?

A Newsweek study showed the average American spends 55 minutes a day searching for an item they own and cannot find. That is almost 12 days a year! When every item has a place, you save time because you know where it is.

Imagine how good it would feel to start your day feeling calmer and more energized because you were not searching for misplaced keys or your favorite shirt?

Instead, use that time to enjoy a cup of coffee or read the paper before heading out the door.

A messy room affects your sleep pattern. A lack of sleep can cause depression, increase your stress level, and affect your ability to think clearly.

Michael J. Breus, Ph.D., a Diplomate of the American Board of Sleep Medicine (AMSB), says that when you walk into a room, your eye will determine whether you are going to have an easy time or hard time falling asleep. Clutter raises your stress level. That's why it's hard for your mind to rest and sleep well.

Feeling overwhelmed at cleaning your bedroom? Start with easy cleaning tasks such as making your bed every morning and wash your sheets regularly.

Consider this survey conducted by the National Sleep Foundation. People who make their beds every day are 19 percent more likely to report regularly getting a good night’s sleep. And 75 percent of individuals said freshly cleaned sheets made them more comfortable, therefore making it easier to fall asleep.

Keeping your bedroom clean will help you sleep better which will make you happier.

Are you guilty of leaving piles of clutter around your home or dirty dishes in the sink? If so, you run the risk of your partner becoming resentful and irritated.

Furthermore, a dirty and cluttered home can make you feel helpless and overwhelmed. Have you snapped at your partner because you were frustrated spending time looking for an item in your home that you knew was there?

When every item has a proper place in your home, it will create less conflict in your home. Best of all, you and your family get to enjoy your home more.

Are you under the impression that green cleaning products do not have the ability to disinfect?

If so, you may not have heard of Benefect Botanical Disinfectant. At Bee-Clene, this is our favorite eco-friendly cleaning product that we use daily. And we can't wait to use it in your home.

Benefect is the only cleaner and disinfectant on the market made from pure plant botanicals. Thyme essential oil is the active ingredient, and this thyme is specially grown and blended for this product.
Current practices used to kill germs have created highly resistant and dangerous germs in just 60 years. And destroying these organisms require harsher, more toxic chemicals. Also, this leads to more complicated disinfecting systems.

Plants produce germ killing ‘essential oils’ to provide defense from invading microbes, much like how our bodies produce antibodies for our protection. For over 5,000 years, history has shown that microbes do not build up a tolerance or resistance to the antimicrobial action of essential oils. In fact, the amount of essential oils that is needed to destroy microbes has not changed in the course of history.

A Hospital Grade Disinfectant That is Safe to Use in Your Home

                              Benefect has the following properties:

• Bactericidal- destroys bacteria, including MRSA, commonly referred to as staph.
• Virucidal- kills viruses, including HIV1
• Fungicidal- destroys and stops the growth of fungus (mold and mildew)
• Tuberculocidal

Benefect has the cleaning power of bleach, without the side effect of toxic fumes. As a deodorizer, it kills odor causing microorganisms. And because no synthetic scents or fragrances are added, all you smell is a natural, fresh scent when used.

How We Use Benefect for Our Clients

Another reason that we love this product is because it is safe to use around your children and pets. Because of that, we use Benefect to clean a local kids camp. Weekly, after a round of kids leave, our cleaning team sprays Benefect on all of the bunk beds and also use it to clean the camp showers. To disinfect, we spray the product on a surface and let it air dry.

We can use Benefect to disinfect kitchen counters and bathrooms in your home. Since this green cleaning product is made from food grade materials, it is absolutely safe to use on surfaces that come into contact with food.

In addition to the disinfecting benefits, take advantage of getting rid of mildew in your home. Prior to your house cleaning service, let us know about any mildew problems in your home. During our scheduled cleaning, we will spray affected areas. Cleaning these areas with Benefect will get rid of mildew, as well as stop future growth.

    microfiber dust mop

is a smart choice to clean hardwood, laminate, tile, or floors with an epoxy finish. You use a dust mop dry, versus wet. The microfiber material attracts dust with little effort on your end.

When purchasing, look for chenille microfiber. This material is denser with more loops. And chenille provides more surface space to attract more dirt. Consider buying a dust mop that has an extendable handle. This will allow you to dust your ceiling and ceiling corners, giving you two cleaning tools for the price of one.

Another benefit of a dust mop is it has a detachable head. This means you can throw it in the washing machine to sanitize it. You will always have a clean tool to use.

has softer bristles, making it ideal for floors that scratch easily, such as wood and some tile. Because the bristles taper with split fibers, this type of broom is perfect for grabbing finer dirt and debris.

Purchase one with an angled brush. This feature makes it easy to reach into corners, sweep underneath furniture and along baseboards.

When your broom has a buildup of dust and debris, take a towel and wipe down the bristles. Afterward, for an hour, soak your broom in a bucket with warm water and a few drops of dish detergent. Allow to dry out before storing.

is a lifesaver, especially if you have pets that shed (or family members). Use it on hardwood, laminate, cork, or tile flooring. Even after vacuuming, you will be amazed at the hair this broom still picks up on your floor.

When using, pull the broom across the floor versus pushing. Pulling creates a static charge. The charge combined with the rubber attracts debris, dirt, and hair. What’s more, it is a versatile cleaning tool. You can use it to clean hair off of your carpet and upholstery.

Because the head is rubber, you can wash it with soap and warm water, making it a cinch to clean.

is a standout choice! It is a broom and squeegee in one tool. It also comes with a dustpan that attaches with a magnetic connection to the broom handle, meaning you will never have to search for a dustpan in an emergency spill.

This is a must have cleaning tool, especially if you have little ones or pets in your household. And it is safe on all floor surfaces, as the bristles are made of PET plastic.
Depending on the tool you need, all you do is turn a knob to select which side to use. And the dustpan has a deep chamber and a flexible lip that seals against a surface. In one trip you can clean up a spill with ease, without using paper towels or touching any mess. Imagine cleaning up broken glass with liquid, and how much easier and safer it will be.

Because the broom is 15 inches high, you can easily wash your broom and dustpan in the sink with some dish detergent and warm water. Also, the compact size makes it easy to store.

    Borax Cost ≈ 50¢ a load

Borax is a natural water softener and a natural deodorizer. Your laundry detergent will work better, and your laundry will smell clean.

Add a ½ cup of borax to every load along with your regular detergent. Also, be sure to use warm or hot water, because borax will not dissolve as well in cold water.

You can remove tough food stains, as well as wine, blood and grass stains (even when these type of stains have set).

Pre-soak tough stains in warm water and ½ cup of borax for 30 minutes. Afterward, add your regular detergent and run your laundry through a wash cycle.

As a laundry booster, borax saves you money. And your clothes and linens will be cleaner, brighter, therefore lasting longer.

  Get Rid of Rust

Borax Cost ≈ Less than $1

Over time your household appliances and pots and pans rust. A combination of borax and lemon juice will make these items look brand new.

Make a paste, mixing one cup of borax and ¼ cup of fresh lemon juice. Use a sponge and spread a thick layer of this paste onto rusty areas. For nasty rust stains, let the mixture sit for an hour (or longer), then scrub.

Because borax does not scratch delicate surfaces, you can even use it to remove iron stains on porcelain fixtures.

Voila! No more rust.

Do you have mold or mildew growth in your home? If so, reach for a box of 20 Mule Team Borax to help you get rid of this problem.

Combine one cup of borax with a gallon of hot water and mix well. Pour the mixture into a spray bottle and spray onto mildew. Let it sit for a few minutes and wipe clean. Don't rinse the area afterward, because borax will stop the future growth of mold.

Two tablespoons of borax mixed in 3 cups of hot water are all you need to clean a window. Spray this solution on a dirty window and wipe clean. Afterward, mix equal parts of vinegar and water and wipe this solution across the window.

Your windows will have a fabulous streak free shine.

You can also spray this onto dirty window tracks. Then use a toothbrush or small grout brush and clean rag to remove grime.

As a result, your windows will shine, and your window tracks will be clean. What's more, you do not have to use harsh chemicals to get great results.
